Hyatt Residency

Marylebone

Set moments from Marble Arch, the Cigar Terrace at Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill is conceived as a calm urban retreat — a space where greenery, crafted materials and soft architectural structure create a refined outdoor lounge within the city.

Positioned within one of London’s most recognisable districts, the terrace extends the hotel’s hospitality offering into the open air, framing the cigar experience within an environment that feels relaxed, elegant and quietly luxurious. The design carefully balances openness with intimacy, offering guests a sense of enclosure and comfort while maintaining a strong visual connection to the surrounding architecture and streetscape.

The Challenge

The Challenge

The project required the transformation of a prominent, street-facing terrace into a destination space capable of operating comfortably throughout the seasons. Beyond aesthetics, the terrace needed to perform — accommodating cigar rituals alongside food and drinks service, ensuring comfort, durability and discretion in a highly visible urban setting.

Achieving year-round usability within an exposed environment presented a technical and spatial challenge. The design had to introduce warmth and atmosphere without fully enclosing the terrace, preserving its openness while mitigating wind, temperature fluctuations and city noise.

Another key consideration was identity. The terrace needed to feel like a natural extension of the hotel’s refined character while also establishing its own distinct presence — recognisable, atmospheric and inviting both during the day and into the evening.

Our Solution

The design introduces layered planting, tailored seating arrangements and refined material detailing to create a garden-like setting that softens the surrounding urban context. Structured greenery overhead defines the ceiling plane, creating intimacy and visual rhythm while discreetly integrating heating and lighting systems to support year-round comfort.

A carefully curated material palette reinforces a sense of craftsmanship and longevity. Natural stone surfaces, woven outdoor furniture, and warm metal accents were selected for their durability in outdoor conditions while maintaining a residential softness and tactile quality. Every finish was chosen to age gracefully and withstand daily use in hospitality.

Spatial zoning was thoughtfully considered to accommodate both social groups and quieter, more contemplative moments. Semi-enclosed seating areas provide privacy without isolation, while open lounge zones encourage sociability. Lighting plays a pivotal role, shifting the mood from relaxed daytime retreat to an ambient evening destination.

The final result is a composed, comfortable environment that feels both connected to the energy of London and gently removed from it — a distinctive outdoor extension of the hotel experience that invites guests to pause, unwind and linger.
